Elks Lodge #470

Description

Frostburg Elks Lodge #470 Derby Day in 2017 received recognition as the best Elks Community Project in the nation at the 153rd Grand Lodge Convention held July 15-20, 2017 in Reno, Nevada. Dale Iman, Exalted Ruler of Frostburg Elks Lodge #470 accepted the award from Michael Zeller, Grand Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The 2017 conference was attended by 7,000 Elks representing the 2,000 lodges located throughout the country. Frostburg Elks Derby Day has been held each year since 1977 on Main Street Frostburg during the week of the 4th of July. Upon receiving the award, Iman praised the support of the community and the hard work and dedication of the volunteers involved. “Frostburg Elks Derby Day is the perfect community project and deserves this 1st place award. The support Derby Day receives from the community is unbelievable. Derby Day has sponsors for nearly everything including the race cars, the trophies and driver jackets. The program is loaded with advertisement from local businesses but even more impressive is that every year on Derby Day, Main Street is packed with spectators supporting the youth of this area”. Frostburg Elks Derby Day Project outscored other community project applications which were submitted by lodges from 39 states. The most significant strength of the Frostburg Derby Day Project is the commitment of volunteers involved in Derby Day. It takes a total of 130 volunteers putting in more than 3,900 hours of work to make Derby Day successful. “This award belongs to every single person who has volunteered, sponsored, donated, purchased an ad or cheered on the racers. It belongs to every child that ever drove a car down the hill and every parent or mentor that supported those drivers. Anyone and everyone who has supported this event over the past 41 years has contributed to the success of this event and deserves a piece of this award” Iman said. From the inaugural Elks Derby Day in 1977 to this day, the primary goals of the event are to embrace values which are important to Elks. To provide our youth with a wholesome, patriotic activity. To create hometown memories, to give a lasting gift to Frostburg and the surrounding communities, and to raise funds for Elks charities. This national recognition as the best Elks Community Project in the country, reinforces that Frostburg Elks have accomplished those goals.
