"Buy Nothing, Give Freely" Event

Informational flyer about the Buy Nothing, Give Freely event

The Frostburg Green Team and the Allegany County Library System are excited to announce the second annual “Buy Nothing, Give Freely” Event. This event invites residents to keep their unwanted items out of the waste stream and instead offer them up to their neighbors for free.

The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 18, from 7:00 AM-5:00 PM, and Sunday, May 19, from 10:00 AM–4:00 PM, at the City Place in Frostburg (14 S. Water Street). Contributions can be dropped off at City Place from 4:00 PM–7:00 PM on Thursday, May 16, and Friday, May 17, and will also be accepted all weekend until noon on Sunday, May 21.

Here’s how it works: Participants drop off items they no longer need, the items are sorted by category, and attendees are welcome to browse the items up for grabs and take home any items that may be useful to them.

Any leftover items will be donated to local charities. For more information, please call 301-689-6000, ext. 110.

This event is a collaboration between the Frostburg Green Team and the Allegany County Library System. The event was intentionally scheduled to be held the weekend prior to the City’s annual Bulk Trash Collection to encourage reuse and repurposing of unwanted items. The library naturally fosters a culture of sharing where people come together to exchange not only books, but also information and resources. Just like the Library of Things collection, this partnership with the Frostburg Green Team aligns with the library system’s commitment to sustainability and reducing waste by promoting the sharing economy and reducing unnecessary consumption.

The “Buy Nothing” initiative is founded on a “gift economy,” in which no money, services, or bartering are necessary for giving and getting in order to foster community and neighbor relationships in Frostburg and beyond. Similarly, the Frostburg Green Team’s mission is to guide the City’s efforts towards a more vibrant and environmentally sustainable community by creating unique opportunities for engagement and inclusivity.

This partnership was formed by a shared desire to keep unwanted items out of local landfills and into the hands of individuals who can give new life and purpose to these items. “The Frostburg Library is proud to be partnering with the Frostburg Green Team to bring this event and our other community swaps to Frostburg,” said Caitlin Molter, Service Leader at the Frostburg Library. “The ACLS mission is to enrich and improve the lives of the people in our community. This partnership helps us carry out our mission in a unique way.”
