My wife and I moved to Frostburg from Texas in 2022.  She is originally from Lonaconing.  I have retired here and I have made numerous new friends. I am happy here and feel this is a very nice town to retire. Our neighborhood is very peaceful and quiet.  The only reason I am writing to you today is to tell you that you have a beautiful town here BUT the old building with the cones around it on Main Street is such a sore sight.  It drags away beauty from the entire block it sits on.  Is there a reason why it hasn't been upkept or taken down?  I was just curious that's all.  It truly is a sore sight to your community. All the lawns and most of the homes are very nice and well maintained also.  But on the 100 block of west mechanic street the grass is over two feet tall. Definitely a nesting place for snakes.  I don't think that grass was cut in the two years we lived here. I guess the city doesn't have any kind of ordinance about that. Nonetheless, a beautiful community here and I plan to stay and live out my retirement years.  I was really appalled y the monthly food giveaway and the everything free two days.  Sincerely, Scott Singer.

Hi, Mr. Singer,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. Please see our responses below:

1. The Nickel Building on Main Street: It may seem that nothing is happening at this location on E. Main Street, but I assure you that behind the scenes, there is much being done to restore this building to its former grandeur. There are significant renovation plans that have recently been approved by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office, the Maryland Dept. of Housing and Community Development, the Maryland Historical Trust, and the City's permitting department. The building permit is expected to be released this week, and the renovation work will begin soon thereafter. The cones are in place as a precautionary measure, and while they are not the most attractive sight, they ensure the safety of the public, which is the City's utmost concern. The building will be outfitted with an all-new facade in the coming months, and the cones will be removed once the front-facing renovation work is complete. We appreciate your patience!

2. High grass on W. Mechanic Street: The City does have an ordinance stating that grass may not be more than 12-inches in height. I have alerted our Code Enforcement Officer to the concerns you've raised, and he will be doing extra enforcement duties in that location. If you ever have code enforcement concerns, please feel free to call code enforcement at 301-689-6000, ext. 109.

Thank you again for reaching out to us about these matters, and please don't hesitate to call with any future concerns.

Sincerely,

Bethany Fife
