Water Shutoff Information

Water Shutoff Information
Water service may be terminated when utility accounts are delinquent as defined by City Code, Article 6 - Water and Sewers. An account is delinquent if unpaid 50 days after the bill due date.

Restoring Water Service During Normal Business Hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm)

Step 1: Pay the entire account balance by 2:30pm.

No personal or business checks are accepted once the water has been turned off. Payment is accepted in person at the Finance Department at 37 S Broadway. Online payments through the City website are also accepted. Customers wishing to have water service restored must call 301-689-6000, extension 106 after initiating an online payment so the pending payment can be confirmed.

Step 2: Schedule an appointment with the Finance Department to have water turned back on during normal business hours.

The Finance Department will schedule an appointment with the Water Department to meet the customer at the property location. Appointments are available between 7:10am and 4:00pm. The customer must be at the property for the water to be turned on. If the Water Department does not get an answer when they knock on the property door, the water will not be turned on.

Restoring Water Service Outside of Normal Business Hours
Scheduling an appointment for water service to be turned on outside normal business hours requires payment of the entire account balance plus an additional After-Hours fee of $80. The After-Hours fee gives customers the flexibility of having water turned on during the weekend or after 4pm on weekdays. The After-Hours fee is collected at the Finance Department for payments made Monday through Friday from 8am until 4pm.

After-Hours Option
Step 1: Pay the entire account balance and the After-Hours fee at the Police Department dispatch office only when the Finance Department is closed.
Payment must be cash, certified check or money order. No checks or credit card payments are accepted.

Step 2: Schedule an appointment with the Director of Public Works to have water turned back on.

The Police Dispatcher will request a contact phone number from the customer and the Director of Public Works will contact the customer to schedule a time to meet at the property for the water to be turned back on. The customer, or their representative, still must be at the property for the water to be turned on.
